How many people does a bundle feed?
We are very generous with our portion sizes. Our bundles are designed to give two adults two large portions and usually allow for leftovers!
What's in a scratchDC bundle?
Your scratchDC bundle will contain ALL of the ingredients and directions you need to make dinner. You’ll enthusiastically unwrap the bundle to find all of the fresh locally-sourced ingredients – pre-chopped, perfectly measured and marinated. Be sure to read the included recipe in full before you begin cooking.
What will I need to cook the meal?
scratchDC provides all the ingredients you could possibly need, chopped, measured and marinated. Our recipes are specifically designed to use as little kitchen equipment as possible to save you time and make the meals doable in even the barest of kitchens. Some equipment our recipes often call for are: pots, skillets, an oven, a stovetop/range, spoons, forks, bowls, plates, spatulas, flipper-thingies and most importantly… appetites.
Do I need to cook my meal the day its delivered? How long does a bundle last?
Ideally the bundle is cooked the same day as its prepared and delivered, but we know things happen and plans change. All bundles are made with the freshest possible ingredients and all are designed to be good for a day or two after they are delivered as long as they stay refrigerated. All bundles are different and many last days longer so please contact us with questions regarding your particular bundle.
Where does the food in my scratchDC bundle come from?
scratchDC prides itself on making every effort to source our meats, produce and dairy from local farms and producers. In most cases, we can tell you exactly where your carrot, chicken or cabbage grew up. We’ve teamed with a number of farms and farming cooperatives in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania to ensure you're getting the freshest food possible. We even hope to grow some of our own over the next year! Of course, local produce is seasonal, so when the spinach aint sproutin in the Shenandoah, or the peppers aint poppin along the Potomac, we source much of our produce from certified organic farms all across the country. When buying organic is not feasible (due to supplier shortages or because it would significantly raise the price of a bundle), scratchDC sources conventionally grown foods from vetted and trusted local suppliers. There are rare cases when a certain product we planned for and listed as organic or local on the recipe may be unavailable from our suppliers the day we order. In that case, we may have to substitute a conventional alternative.
What if I don't like or am allergic to a certain ingredient?
For the most part, our ingredients are packed separately. So if you don't want to add a lot of spice, you don't have to. If you are watching your sodium, you don't have to add any salt. If you are counting cals, you don't have to use all the butter or cream, etc! If you let us know far enough in advance, we can generally omit an ingredient for you.
When do you deliver?
We deliver our dinner bundles M-Th from about 12:00pm to 5:00pm.
My building has a front desk/office fridge, can scratchDC deliver there?
Absolutely! If your front desk has a fridge, just let us know or choose the "Deliver to my Office/Doorman" delivery option. We'll be sure to get the bundle there before 4:30 (office) or 5:30 (doorman) so you can pick the bundle up at your convenience!
What if I'm not home when you deliver?
When you order online you choose a convenient delivery time that you expect to be home, but we know that sometimes life happens. If something changes, just give us a call and we’ll try our darndest to accommodate you! If you do not notify us of a change in schedule and are not home, we will attempt to contact you and come up with a plan. If we are unable to get a hold of you within ten minutes of our arrival, using the instructions and phone numbers you provide, we will be forced to head to our next delivery. If contact is made after we attempt delivery, we will do our absolute best to fit you into the route at some point in the evening. If it is not feasible, we will attempt to reschedule delivery for the following day.
Why do you charge a delivery fee?
Getting your bundles to you safe and sound is our primary concern. The delivery fee helps cover the expense of coolers, cooler bags, ice packs and of course, your friendly drivers!
How healthy is a scratchDC bundle?
In a word: very.
We use the absolute best, most wholesome, unprocessed and pure ingredients we can find. Recipes will obviously vary in their healthyness/indulgence but we try to provide a nice balance of protein, veggies and carbs in each meal. Over the last few months we’ve been working with our nutritionist, Sarah Waybright (of whyfoodworks.com) to tweak our recipes to use more healthy ingredients and construct more complete meals. We are VERY generous with our portions (each bundle could likely serve 3) but we still try to keep the meals in the 500-1100 calorie per serving range (note that “light options” at restaurants typically run in the 600-800 calorie range). How do I calculate the calories?
Our calorie analysis comes from the recipe calculators at www.recipal.com. We plug in the recipe ingredients and then their nifty tools analyze for caloric content, nutrient balance, and a bunch of other cool things. We count the nutrition info of the entire bundle, so the numbers are often a little inflated - you will not likely be using ALL of the salt and pepper or ALL of any sauce, etc. If you want to know more about a particular recipe shoot us an email or give us a call and we’ll be happy to send it over!
Why is there a range of calories?
The last thing we want is for you to still be hungry when you're done digging in, so our bundles are designed to give you enough food to serve two people VERY generously. With most of our bundles there is usually a bit left over for… well… leftovers. The range of calories is given to provide an idea of how much is in the intended serving size and how much you’d be getting if you go for gold and eat it all in one sitting. And don't worry – we know, it’s virtually impossible to stop eating when there is so much deliciousness in front of you so we promise we wont judge! Why don't you publish nutritional breakdowns for all of the meals?
The website we use to analyze the nutrition data, www.recipal.com (which we have found to be the best) does not currently allow us to republish their graphs and analysis on the web. Again, if you would like a full breakdown of a particular bundle, send us an email or give us a call!
Why do you use calories as a nutritional benchmark?
After talking it over with our nutritionist, Sarah Waybright (of whyfoodworks.com), we came to the conclusion that calories would be the most accurate representation of the leanness or indulgence of our meals. There is huge debate in the nutrition world about the benefits of certain fats vs others and to analyze a meal based on fat content could be misleading so we’re sticking with the good ole calories!
What delivery times do you offer?
We deliver from about 12:00pm - 5PM each day. Remember, bundles are only available for and will be delivered on the day they are listed on the menu – meaning if you order Wednesday's bundle, it will be delivered on Wednesday! You can order same day, as supplies last, or order up to two weeks in advance. If you need assistance ordering, don't hesitate to give us a call at (202) 505-5610.
Where do you deliver?
Currently we deliver to Washington DC, Arlington and Alexandria VA AND Bethesda and Chevy Chase, MD. If our site says we're "not in your neighborhood just yet" when you plug in your address for an order, give us a call (202) 505-5610 and we’ll see what we can do to accommodate you.
How do I order?
Glad you asked! Head on over to our ordering page to take a look at this weeks options. We take same day orders until supplies last. You can also place an order up to a week in advance. If you don’t see a certain day's item on the menu, then we’re likely already sold out. As my momma always used to say, the early bird gets the bundle.
Do you store credit card information?
Nope! To keep your information safe and maintain PCI compliance, scratchDC's 3rd party ordering system, Shopify, does not store any credit card information.
What if I order a lot, do I need to put in my credit card info every time?
If you use our standard processor, than unfortunately, you must. However, we are now taking payments via PayPal as well! To order with PayPal, simply click the PayPal box on the checkout page. I don't really cook much, can I handle scratchDC?
We don’t blame you! Cooking can be a hassle. Researching a recipe, going to the store and ultimately buying more of an ingredient than you need… it's silly. It is you, O ye of little cook, who Scratch was designed for. We want to bring you the sweet, savory satisfaction of making your own awesome meal, from scratch, while saving you time, money and eliminating wasted food. We even offer cooking classes to help you get going.
No seriously, I've never cooked before... HELP!
Well, we’re happy that Scratch is your first step on the path to becoming a culinary master. Our recipes are usually pretty simple and written intuitively. All call for common kitchen utensils (pots, pans, flippers, an oven and burners) and we take care of the grunt work like peeling, chopping, marinating and mixing.
Best of all, if you ever get stuck or have a question, give us a call and our chefs will walk you through it!

I have allergies, is scratchDC right for me?
Yes and no. Be sure to take a look at the ingredients of each scratchDC bundle before you buy. All common allergens are listed. We are working to expand our gluten-free options and plan on offering allergy and diet friendly bundles very soon. If you have questions about an ingredient or bundle, don’t hesitate to give us a ring.

What do I do if there's an issue with my scratchDC bundle, or I'm upset with my experience?
We want every single person who cooks with us to absolutely LOVE the experience. If we come up short in any way, it is not acceptable and we truly apologize. We’re still a very young company trying to work out all of the kinks and your feedback helps us grow. If you are unhappy in any way, please give us a call.
